OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman Discusses the Path to Artificial Superintelligence

In a recent dialogue with Y Combinator's President and CEO Garry Tan, Sam Altman, the head of OpenAI, delved into the future prospects of Artificial Superintelligence (ASI), an AI surpassing human intelligence by leaps and bounds. Altman, who has previously indicated that ASI might still be "thousands of days away," emphasized the necessity for substantial technological advancements to achieve this milestone.

Altman expressed an optimistic yet pragmatic view on the progression towards ASI. "I can see a path where the work we are doing just keeps compounding and the rate of progress we've made over the last three years continues for the next three or six or nine or whatever," he remarked during the conversation. He acknowledged potential hurdles but maintained a strong belief in AI's potential to augment human capabilities significantly.

The discussion also covered the distinction between Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), which involves machines reaching human-level intelligence, and ASI, which would surpass it, potentially solving complex issues beyond human capacity.

The Vision from Inception

Reflecting on OpenAI's journey, Altman revisited the company's founding in 2015, where it set out with the audacious goal of developing AGI. "We said from the very beginning we were going to go after AGI at a time when in the field you weren’t allowed to say that because that just seemed impossibly crazy," Altman recounted. This bold vision, however, was met with skepticism from industry peers.

At the time, OpenAI faced stiff competition from entities like DeepMind, but with fewer resources, they adopted a strategic focus. "We were far less resourced than DeepMind and others and so we said okay, they’re going to try a lot of things and we’ve just got to pick one and really concentrate and that’s how we can win here," Altman explained, highlighting the strategic concentration that has been pivotal to OpenAI's strategy.
