One Nation One Subscription Scheme Makes Scholarly Research Articles Available to 18 Million Students from Today
New Delhi, January 1, 2025 - In a significant move towards promoting education and research in India, the government launched the "One Nation One Subscription" (ONOS) programme today, granting free access to scholarly research articles and journal publications to approximately 18 million students enrolled in government-funded institutions of higher education.
As part of this initiative, students will have access to at least 30 high-end academic journals published globally, available through a simple, user-friendly, and fully digital process. This endeavour is expected to enhance the country's research capabilities by bridging the knowledge gap between Indian scholars and international researchers.
The Union cabinet had approved the 'One Nation One Subscription' scheme in November 2024. To implement this plan, the Department of Higher Education will have a unified portal that will cater to institutions across the country. Additionally, the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) will periodically review the usage of One Nation One Subscription and showcase publications by Indian authors.
For three consecutive years – 2025, 2026, and 2027 – Rs 6,000 crore has been allocated for this initiative. The Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET), a central agency responsible for coordinating the national subscription, aims to cover more than 6,300 institutions that will provide benefits to nearly 1.8 crore students, faculty members, and researchers.
Thirty major international journal publishers have been included in One Nation One Subscription, offering access to their nearly 13,000 e-journals through the portal. With this launch, India takes a significant leap forward in its pursuit of global knowledge sharing and educational advancement.
