Norwegian Chess Grandmaster Disqualified from World Rapid and Blitz Championships Over Dress Code Violation
The 2024 World Rapid and Blitz Championships were marred by controversy on Saturday as Norwegian chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen was disqualified from participating in both events after violating the FIDE dress code.
Carlsen, widely regarded as one of the greatest chess players of all time, was fined $200 for wearing jeans during the tournament, which is strictly prohibited according to FIDE rules. The fine was issued despite Carlsen's initial attempt to comply by changing into a non-violating outfit for the following round, but ultimately refusing to do so.
The disqualification decision was met with frustration from fans and fellow players alike, as Carlsen's stance on the dress code issue sparked a heated debate about FIDE enforcement. The situation had been brewing for some time, prompting a statement from Women's World Chess Champion Judit Polgar, who wrote on X that "Magnus Carlsen is OUT of the World Rapid Championship, and will NOT play in the World Blitz Championship..." due to his refusal to change.
Carlsen himself expressed his frustration with the situation during an interview on the "Take Take Take" YouTube channel. He cited a poor performance at the tournament, which had already seen him suffer a loss to Denis Lazavik and draw with several other top players. However, he remained resolute in his stance on the dress code issue, stating that it had become "a bit of a matter of principle for me."
When asked if he would appeal the decision, Carlsen declared, "No, I haven’t appealed. Honestly, I’m too old at this point to care too much." He also confirmed that he would not be participating in the World Blitz Championship, following his disqualification.
Carlsen's comments have been interpreted as a reflection of a broader discontent with FIDE's practices and enforcement of rules. In a statement about FIDE's handling of past incidents, Carlsen stated that he had "no patience left" with the organization's actions, particularly regarding their stance on Freestyle chess players signing with competitive tournaments.
The incident has marked a significant moment in the world of competitive chess, as many are now watching to see how other top players and governing bodies respond to Carlsen's defiance.
