No HMPV Outbreak Reported in Telangana, Health Officials Reassure Public

Hyderabad, Dec 25: The Telangana health department has issued a statement addressing concerns about a reported outbreak of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China, reassuring citizens that there is no cause for alarm and urging them to take preventive measures against respiratory infections.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), HMPV is a relatively common virus affecting primarily younger and older age groups, causing flu-like symptoms particularly during winter. However, officials have clarified that no cases of HMPV have been reported in Telangana to date.

A review of respiratory infections within the state shows no significant increase in December 2024 compared to the previous year. The health department has confirmed that its surveillance and monitoring systems are functioning effectively to identify any emerging trends or patterns, but so far, there is no reason for concern.

As a precautionary measure, the health department has advised citizens to adopt preventive measures such as frequent handwashing, wearing masks in crowded areas, and getting vaccinated against seasonal influenza.

"Our primary focus is to keep Telangana's residents healthy and safe," said an official from the health department. "We are closely monitoring the situation and advising the public to take simple yet effective precautions to protect themselves against respiratory infections."

The health department's reassurance comes after reports of a HMPV outbreak were triggered by media attention in China. However, with no reported cases in Telangana, officials say the public can rest easy without concerns about an impending outbreak.

Residents are advised to remain vigilant, especially during winter months, and follow established guidelines for preventing respiratory infections.
