No HMPV Cases Reported in India Amid China Outbreak Speculation

Dhaka, Bangladesh: The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has sought to allay fears about a potential outbreak of human metapneumovirus (HMPV), a highly contagious respiratory virus, by stating that there is "nothing to be alarmed about" in India.
In a press conference held yesterday, DGHS Director-General Atul Goel assured reporters that no cases of the illness have been reported on Indian soil, calling it "a normal respiratory problem that causes the common cold." While concerns over HMPV have been on the rise following reports from neighboring China, the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has stated that it is closely monitoring seasonal influenza and respiratory cases to ensure public safety.
Reports of an outbreak in China remain unconfirmed, with Chinese authorities working to identify its cause. The NCDC has emphasized its commitment to staying informed on the situation through close communication with international health agencies.
As winter sets in across the country, many are reminded that respiratory illnesses tend to increase during this time due to the cold wave and deteriorating air quality. However, the DGHS urges citizens to remain vigilant but maintain a sense of calm regarding HMPV, citing a lack of evidence suggesting it poses an immediate threat to public health.
Meanwhile, Chinese authorities have taken proactive steps to address the situation by implementing a monitoring system for pneumonia of unknown origin as the country braces for an anticipated spike in respiratory illnesses during the winter months.
