Nightly Garbage Burning Leaves Residents in Distress, Groundwater Contamination Suspected

Mittaganahalli: More than 1,000 residents around a dump yard have expressed outrage over the prolonged burning of toxic waste in the area, which has left a pungent smell and health concerns.

The garbage dumping site, located near Mittaganahalli, has been a source of frustration for residents due to its poor management and lack of proper disposal. Despite repeated complaints to local authorities and posting on social media, the problems persist.

According to residents, people at an economically weaker socio-economic position from immigrant communities are often seen burning waste, including wires, in an attempt to extract copper for living purposes. This has led to a strong stench and toxic smoke, causing irritations in the eyes, nose, and lungs.

"It's a nightmare every time we step out of our homes," said a resident who revealed that her nose started bleeding due to the fumes. "We're terrified of getting sick or losing our health."

Resident concerns also extend to groundwater contamination from nearby burning sites, including one situated near a lake in the area. Experts point out that this water pollution could have hazardous effects.

"Apartments are taking a tanker route for fresh water from elsewhere due to awareness about groundwater," claimed source.

The situation has become so unbearable that residents and local activists have filed complaint against Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP)  authorities who often take late action in addressing the issue.

Meanwhile, local citizens report planning to relocate to their nearby location amid growing deterioration of air quality due to toxic smog affecting well-being.

The government is urged to intervene and solve this complex problem.
