New Year's Day Terror Attack in New Orleans Leaves Death Toll High
Atleast 15 people were killed and over three dozen others injured after a devastating terrorist attack on New Year's Day in New Orleans. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in condemnation of the attack, stated that he strongly condemned "cowardly terrorist attack" and expressed his condolences to the victims and their families.
The incident occurred when a man intentionally drove a pick-up truck into a crowded crowd of revellers on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter area of New Orleans. The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, is no other than a US citizen from Texas who was seen flying a black ISIS flag from his vehicle.
LaToya Cantrell, the Mayor of New Orleans, condemned the attack calling it 'barbaric and senseless'. Joe Biden, the President, expressed solidarity with the victims' families and stated that "there is no justification for violence of any kind" urging that the nation's communities will not "be attacked".
The investigation into this horrific crime is being led by the FBI with assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. US authorities are scrambling to unveil motives behind several recent violent incidents.
