Netflix Documentary Sparks Controversy: 'Bharat's Star Actor' Sues Ex-Wife and Film Team

Hyderabad: Bollywood star Dhanush has taken the Indian film industry by storm with a lawsuit against his ex-wife Nayanthara, her husband Vignesh Shivan, and Netflix. The dispute revolves around the copyright infringement of visuals from his 2015 film "Naanum Rowdy Dhaan" in Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairy Tale, a documentary produced under their banner Rowdy Pictures Private Limited.

The case, filed in the Madras High Court, alleges that the visuals were used without permission by Nayanthara and her production team. Dhanush's counsel stated that an earlier notice sent to Netflix demanded the immediate removal of the infringing content within 24 hours, warning of significant damages amounting to Rs 10 crores.

Netflix was also named in the complaint after it partnered with Los Gatos Production Services India LLP, which produced the documentary under contract. The case raises questions about intellectual property rights and the responsibilities of streaming giants in respecting creators' work.

On Monday, the Madras High Court allowed PS Raman, senior counsel for Dhanush, to proceed with his case against Netflix. The court's decision has sparked debate across the Indian film industry, highlighting the importance of protecting creative assets and holding accountable those responsible for copyright infringement.
