Neeraj Chopra Honoured with Honorary Rank of Lieutenant Colonel by Government

New Delhi: In a historic recognition of India's Olympic medallist and world champion Neeraj Chopra's achievements, the Ministry of Defence announced today that he has been conferred the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army.

Mr. Chopra, 27, was awarded the honour effective from 16 April, 2025, by President Ram Nath Kovind. The decision was taken after a recommendation from Major General GS Choudhry, Joint Secretary, Department of Military Affairs, who praised Chopra's relentless pursuit of excellence and his role in inspiring a generation of Indians.

Chopra joins the ranks of other distinguished Indian sports personalities, including former cricket captains M.S. Dhoni and Kapil Dev, who have been awarded honorary military titles for their contributions to the nation.

Born in Khandra village, Haryana, Chopra began his journey as a Naib Subedar in the Indian Army's sports programme in 2016 before being promoted to Subedar Major in 2024. He is now set to compete in international competitions next month, with the Doha Diamond League event scheduled for 16 May.

The Ministry of Defence termed Chopra's honorary commission "a symbol of the growing synergy between India's sporting and defence communities". Defending officials described the move as a testament to the nation's appreciation for excellence and national pride.

Chopra's elevation to honorary Lieutenant Colonel has been widely welcomed by sports authorities, fans, and government officials across the country. Athletics Federation of India President Adille Sumariwalla hailed Chopra's journey as a "beacon of hope" for Indian youth, reminding everyone that dedication, humility, and service can inspire positive change.

This honour is seen as a fitting recognition of Chopra's achievements in athletics and his contributions to national pride. It also underlines the importance of nurturing talent and celebrating national excellence.
