NEA Global Forum on Nuclear Education Seeks Global Collaboration for Sector's Future

PARIS, November 22, 2024 - Representatives from the Council of Advisors at the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) gathered at its headquarters in Paris for the seventh meeting of the NEA Global Forum on Nuclear Education, Science, Technology, and Policy. The two-day meeting brought together experts from around the world to discuss progress in addressing long-standing gaps in nuclear education and human capacity development.

The meeting was led by Professor Seungjin Kim of Purdue University, who chairs the Global Forum on Nuclear Education. Joining him were Vice-Chair, Professor Sungyeol Choi of Seoul National University, Korea, and NEA Director-General William D. Magwood, IV. The agenda highlighted updates from working groups addressing challenges in nuclear education across various areas, including gender balance issues.

One key initiative discussed was the annual Rising Stars Workshop, which took place on 25-26 November at the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Germany. This falls under Working Group 1 and aims to address gaps in nuclear education by supporting students and researchers in their careers.

Representatives from official observer organisations, including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the European Commission, and the European Nuclear Education Network (ENEN), also attended the meeting to share their educational initiatives with partners and stakeholders. These presentations reinforced existing collaborations and ensured that all opportunities for nuclear education support are being leveraged.

The upcoming Global Forum Symposium in Autumn 2025, hosted by the University of Michigan, was also discussed during the meeting. Participants learned more about the draft programme, which will incorporate elements from the Rising Stars Workshop 2025.
