Nationwide Push as Cycling Federation Appoints French Coach Kevin Sireau to Boost Indian Cycling
Chennai, TN: In an effort to catapult cycling into the big leagues, the Cycling Federation of India (CFI) has appointed France's renowned cycling coach, Kevin Sireau, as head coach for the sprint category. Sireau, a two-time Olympic silver medalist with 37 years in the sport, brings a wealth of experience to the table.
The move comes on the back of a disappointing performance at the recent World Championships, where India sent a six-member contingent but failed to live up to expectations. The country's top riders, including Esow Alben and Ronaldo Singh, were below par.
"I am enjoying my journey in India and my immediate target is to win medals in the Asian Championships next year," Sireau told our correspondent on the sidelines of the track cycling nationals here. "We need to focus on the process, not just results," he stressed, adding that the team needs time to build trust and momentum.
India has made significant strides in recent years, with the 2019 Junior World Championship gold medal being a notable highlight. However, the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic slowed progress, but riders are now getting back on track.
Sireau's appointment marks a significant shift in focus, with the coach stressing the need for mental conditioning as a key area of improvement. "In mega events, mentality plays a huge part in winning," he said. "Ninety per cent of the races are won when you have a strong mindset."
The CFI and Sports Authority of India (SAI) are reportedly in talks regarding the appointment of a dedicated mental conditioning coach for Indian cyclists.
With Sireau at the helm, cycling fans will be eagerly watching the team's progress. Can this French sensation help propel India to double-digit medal tallies at the Olympics? Only time will tell
