NATION MOURNS LOSS OF Dr MANMOHAN SINGH: PM MODI TERMS DEATH AS BIG BLOW TO NATION
New Delhi, December 27, 2024 - Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh who passed away last evening at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi. In a video message, Mr. Modi described Dr Singh's passing as the loss of a "great leader" and lauded his unwavering commitment to reforms.
Describing Dr Singh as an "honest man" and an "economist who dedicated himself to reforms," Prime Minister Modi stated that his contribution to the development of the nation shall be cherished forever. The Prime Minister highlighted Dr Singh's humble origins, crediting his rise from a distinguished parliamentarian with humility and accessibility.
"It (his life) is an example for future generations regarding how we can rise above struggles and achieve greater heights," said the Prime Minister. "He will always be remembered as one of India's most distinguished leaders."
Earlier today, Prime Minister Modi visited Dr Singh's residence along with Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President JP Nadda, paying their condolences to the former PM's family.
The Centre declared a seven-day mourning period following Dr. Singh's demise, cancelling all government programmes in honor of his legacy. Furthermore, the Prime Minister postponed an event wherein he was set to distribute property cards to 50 lakh people under the Swamitva scheme as part of his respect for former PM Manmohan Singh.
Dr Manmohan Singh will be laid to rest with full state honours on Saturday, in a poignant tribute to this trailblazing leader who devoted himself to welfare and development.
