Modi Urges Police to Adopt Technology, Emphasize Strategic Policing
Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday exhorted the police forces to modernise their functioning by embracing technology and adopting a strategy-driven approach (SMART Policing). Addressing the three-day 59th DGP & IGP Conference in Bhubaneswar, he urged them to become more agile and proactive in dealing with emerging threats.
In his address, Modi stressed on reducing the workload of police personnel through technological means. He suggested that police stations should serve as hubs for resource allocation, thereby enhancing efficiency. He also called upon officers to harness India's unique strengths – 'Aspirational India' and Artificial Intelligence (AI) – to combat cybercrimes, digital frauds, and artificial intelligence-driven challenges.
Highlighting the successes of hackathons conducted during the conference, Modi proposed the idea of national-level police hackathons to address pressing issues. Furthermore, he endorsed the efforts made in urban policing and suggested integrating these initiatives into 100 cities across the country.
Modi also noted that digital crimes have become a significant concern and urged police forces to convert this challenge into an opportunity by embracing technology more proactively. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the security establishment in securing national borders, including those with Bangladesh and Myanmar.
The Prime Minister commended officers who have shown resilience in tackling these complex issues, and praised the measures taken to enhance policing capabilities. Modi reminded that 'Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's legacy should be respected', and emphasized the need for improving police image, professionalism, and capacity building.
On the final day of the conference, Modi presented the President's Police Medals for Distinguished Service to meritorious officers from the Intelligence Bureau. This is the conclusion of the 59th DGP-IGP Conference that has been ongoing in Bhubaneswar since Thursday with a focus on enhancing national security by promoting cutting-edge strategies in policing.
PMO released an official statement detailing the discussions held at the conference, which included wide-ranging conversations on emerging threats to security.
