Modi Embarks on Historic Three-Nation Tour, Visits Guyana for First Time in 56 Years

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has landed in Guyana today, marking the final leg of his significant three-nation tour that includes Brazil and Grenada. This visit makes him the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Guyana in an astonishing 56 years.

In a bid to promote bilateral ties, Modi will co-chair the second India-CARICOM Summit alongside the Prime Minister of Grenada, the current Chairman of CARICOM. The event is expected to bring together leaders from all 15 CARICOM countries.

During his stay in Guyana, the Prime Minister will also hold delegation-level talks with President Irfaan Ali and address the National Assembly. This trip marks a significant milestone in India-Guyana relations, which have been bolstered by structural bilateral mechanisms. These include a joint commission at the ministerial level and periodic consultations between foreign offices.

The two nations have also collaborated through cultural exchange programs, including a joint business council established between FICCI and GCCI. The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) has provided scholarships to Guyanese students to pursue higher education in various fields.

India has extended credit facilities to Guyana for agriculture and information technology initiatives, with Indian companies exploring opportunities in sectors such as biofuels, energy, minerals, and pharmaceuticals. While bilateral trade turnover remains modest, the outlook is positive and promising.

The Prime Minister's visit is expected to deepen India-Guyana relations, explore new areas of cooperation, and promote broader regional partnerships. With this significant tour, Modi has cemented his position as a champion of Indo-Caribbean ties.

As Modi continues his three-nation journey, officials from both countries are optimistic about strengthening economic and cultural ties. The Indian Government's commitment to supporting Guyana in achieving its development goals bodes well for the future of bilateral relations between India and Guyana.
