Aizawl, Mizoram - The Pahlé India Foundation (PIF) and the Mizoram State Health Care Society (MSHCS), under the State Health Agency - Mizoram, Health and Family Welfare Department, have signed a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to tackle the pressing issue of lead poisoning in the state.
The cooperation focuses on implementing an initiative launched by PIF to combat the alarming levels of lead poisoning affecting millions across India, particularly the crippling effects it has on Indian children. According to World Health Organization data, exposure to lead can pose immense danger not only to physical health but also cognitive abilities.
According to Dr. Indu Bhushan, President of i-LEAP and a Distinguished Fellow at PIF, this collaboration signifies nothing less than setting out strides toward transforming the face of public health in Mizoram with an overarching aim - that is, protecting citizens from such pervasive threats.
During discussions held under the current MoU between leaders of both parties, Ravi Pokharna, Executive Director, PIF expressed excitement at joining hands with the Government of Mizoram for the betterment and development of its general population, specifically its children who are at immense risk due to pollution-related health issues. Dr. Biakthansangi at MSHCS echoed sentiments identical to Mr. Pokharna's while pointing out that having access to precise data over lead contamination will offer both partners profound insights into potential intervention measures.
MSHCS and PIF have jointly defined a comprehensive set of goals in an effort to reduce the severity and effects of lead exposure on children within Mizoram:
Analysis of Lead Exposure: Conducting blood lead level tests for pregnant women and kids all over the state.
Lead Contamination Analysis: Assessing various environmental products, water sources included, such as paint, cosmetics, vegetables, spices, cookware, etc., that are at risk of bearing toxic substances to check their lead content levels.
System Capacity Assessment: Examining current policies and assessing the overall setup in place for managing lead-related health complications effectively.
The joint project by MSHCS, PIF, and government authorities aims to set up clear strategies towards tackling this major menace which significantly impacts young and vulnerable lives in the state.
