Meta Launches Edits App to Counter TikTok's Challenges in US Market
In a move aimed at capitalizing on the current challenges faced by TikTok in the US, Meta has announced plans to launch a new app called Edits, which will provide creators with a full suite of creative tools. The Edits app, set to compete directly with TikTok's video creation and sharing capabilities, is currently available for pre-order on the Apple App Store.
According to Adam Mosseri, Instagram's head, there is "a lot going on right now" but the company will continue to provide the best possible tools for creators. Mosseri announced the platform via an Instagram reel, stating that Edits will offer a seamless video editing experience on phones, with all necessary tools for video production in one place. The app promises to be free and aim at helping users turn their ideas into polished videos.
This move comes as TikTok faces legal obstacles in the US, including a recent Supreme Court ruling that has led to the platform going offline. Other ByteDance-owned platforms like CapCut remain inaccessible due to several legal requirements that both TikTok and its parent company ByteDance must meet. Consequently, Meta is trying to capitalize on the situation by expanding its offerings, including extending the maximum length for reels and introducing new features designed to attract users away from TikTok.
Instagram recently extended the time limit for Reels to three minutes, doubling the previous cap of 90 seconds. This move reflects Meta's strategic approach in responding to changes at X (formerly Twitter). When Elon Musk's changes caused an exodus from the platform, Meta launched Threads to capture departing users. Now, with Edits, the company appears to be mirroring this strategy.
The Edits app is expected to launch in July, although exact details are still under wraps. Nonetheless, its pre-order on the Apple App Store signals that Meta is determined to make a push in the competitive social media market, where users' preferences continue to shift towards more creative and engaging platforms.
