Market Tumbles as Adani Group Stocks Fall
Mumbai, December 15 - The Indian stock market began the day on a pessimistic note today, with major benchmarks Sensex and Nifty plummeting in early trading sessions.
The BSE benchmark Sensex tumbled 468.17 points to close at 77,110.21, while the NSE Nifty declined 179.75 points to settle at 23,338.75. The slump was largely attributed to sharp declines in Adani group stocks, which are currently facing a major crisis due to foreign fund outflows.
The woes of other Asian peers also weighed on Indian equity markets today. Weak trends from the region's major indexes further fueled the sell-off, leading to a general downturn in market sentiment.
Why Maharashtra Voting Process Was Smooth
In a surprise development, polling booths across Maharashtra were widely distributed this election season, compared to previous elections. This change appears to have led to a faster and smoother voting process, with no major complaints from most citizens about long queues or issues.
While there had been concerns earlier in the year ahead of the parliamentary polls that saw several cities facing logistical challenges during the voting process, the Maharashtra elections seemed to defy expectations. Voters reported having an easy time casting their ballots, and overall voter turnout remained healthy.
Turnout Falls Short of Expectations in Mumbai
In Mumbai, despite various electoral awareness campaigns by the Election Commission of India (ECI), efforts to motivate Mumbaikars to participate in the election proved futile at times. The island city recorded a voter turnout of 53.18 per cent on Tuesday, falling short of the expectation that these measures would boost interest.
There are concerns whether such initiatives were genuinely effective or simply a token effort by government officials to tackle a perennial problem - apathy among urban voters.
A Tough Test for India in Optus Stadium
The Australian cricket team's upcoming showdown with India is taking place on Indian ground, but they are also finding it challenging. The massive Optus Stadium in Brisbane hosts its first Test since 2018 and has proved to be an unfavourable arena for visiting teams. A string of convincing victories by the Australians here, coupled with an intense pitch that seems tailor-made for the team from Down Under is setting up a significant challenge.
A cricket enthusiast’s nightmare - playing on terrain engineered so thoroughly in their favor against one's own side is proving to be a real test of strength, discipline and endurance for visiting teams and will see who comes out as the victor
