Māori Sidesteps Steal the Show at Groundbreaking Matariki Performance

Last night, the Great Hall at Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Arts Centre in Christchurch played host to a memorable Matariki performance by expert entertainers, the Māori Sidesteps. This energetic one-off show is an inspired addition to this year's Matariki programming, delivering reflection, remembrance, and laughter with equal ease.

The group, composed of founder Jamie McCaskill and talented performers including Regan Taylor, Cohen Holloway, and Sāmoan Sideline Jerome Leota, wowed the audience with their charismatic stage presence, exquisite harmonies, and pointed ribbing at racism and inequality. A highlight of the show was a hilarious Matariki storytime segment featuring matua Tem Morrison, as well as a satirical take on "My Old Man's An All Black".

The group's leader, Jamie McCaskill, brings his unique blend of panache and creativity to the performance, weaving together waiata, skits, parodies, and stories that tackle issues such as land ownership, identity, and division. The result is a feel-good message about connection, pride in our diverse identities, and joy as an antidote to division.

Kudos were given to whoever worked on the arrangements for their first-class efforts. The micro performances, accompanied by just five instruments – a guitar and a drum - created rich harmonies that beautifully belted out poignant waiata.

The show had something for everyone: satire, music, comedy, and heartfelt moments, which left both existing fans of the Māori Sidesteps on their feet cheering, as well as newcomers thoroughly entertained.

The performance was given to perfection, playing with a sense of satirical playfulness at the prestigious centre's colonial history - yet retaining an intimate level that is quite captivating. The atmosphere felt electric and joyful, bringing out the desire for more meaningful communal experiences like these.

For Erin Harrington, this Matriki performance far exceeds expectations as they are met with a "thoroughly uplifting" show that leaves you grinning from ear to ear. While she has seen these performers before, she states that there was genuinely something infectious about their energy and camaraderie - so be sure not to miss them again.
