Major Label Warner Music Group Taps into India's Thriving Music Market
Mumbai, India - Warner Music Group (WMG), one of the world's leading music labels, has strengthened its presence in the growing Indian music market by acquiring a strategic minority investment in SkillBox, a company that sells tickets and offers technology for live events in India. The company has also expanded into artist management.
According to Jay Mehta, Managing Director of Warner Music India and SAARC, the acquisition is part of WMG's goal of becoming an "artist-first, fan-first" company in India. Mehta expressed his confidence that SkillBox aligns perfectly with this vision, highlighting the huge opportunities in India's still nascent live entertainment industry.
Alfonso Perez Soto, President of Emerging Markets at WMG, also underscored the significance of India's emerging music scene. "We see a vast and untapped potential for growth in India's music industry, much like we did with other emerging markets," he stated.
Since poaching Jay Mehta from Sony Music in 2020, WMG has been aggressively expanding its operations in India. The label has struck several key deals, including partnering with notable Punjabi music companies, launching its own Indian folk-music label Maati, and acquiring a majority stake in digital media firm Divo.
Most recently, WMG strengthened its ties with Tips Industries, further solidifying its position as a major player in the Indian music industry. With this latest acquisition, SkillBox will have access to WMG's global marketing expertise and resources, enabling it to tap into new markets and reach a wider audience.
