Major Athletes Descend on Belgrade for High-Stakes Indoor Meeting
Many of the world's top athletes, including multiple gold medalists Angelina Topic of Britain, Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece and USA's Ronnie Baker, will face off in the highly-anticipated Belgrade Indoor Meeting at the Savićeva Hall in Belgrade on Wednesday.
The event marks the second leg of the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold series, which kicked off in Astana last weekend. Among those taking part are some familiar faces including Thobias Montler from Sweden and Roko Farkas from Croatia - both medal favourites in the men's long jump event.
Topic, a 19-year-old sensation from Britain, is also set to compete in the women's long jump event. She has enjoyed a stellar career so far, claiming European silver last year and winning the World U20 title just four weeks after returning from injury.
This year offers her the chance to target two more world titles: indoors in Nanjing in March and outdoors in Tokyo in September. Tentoglou will be equally determined to set himself up for success, with a strong start to the season potentially paving the way for him to take home another world title - this time in Nanjing.
Montler also won the men's long jump event at Belgrade Indoor Meeting alongside winning the World Indoor Championships. He’ll face stiff competition from Roko Farkas and Filip Pravdica both of Croatia who are set to compete alongside Lester Lescay from Cuba. Competition in the women’s 60m will be fierce, as well. Zaynab Dosso from Italy is looking for revenge against rivals as she faces off with Samuele Ceccarelli from Italy and Ali Anwar Al-Balushi from Oman.
In addition, there's a world-class field competing in the women's 60m hurdles featuring Pia Skrzyszowska of Poland to name but one. While many of these major stars compete on track - including Ronnie Baker, USA athlete with multiple gold medals winning record; and Angelina Topic's counterparts Britt Weerman from Europe and Britons Kateryna Tabashnyk in the women's 60m event.
On the same day a world-standard men’s shotput throw will bring together athletes like Asmir Kolasinac – a four-time Olympian looking to go out with a bang. Poland's Konrad Bukowiecki, Roger Steen from USA and Serbian champion will be set head-to-head in front of fans on Wednesday.
Baker is the star man competing in men’s 60m that takes place alongside Dosso as part of women's competition and will compete against an excellent field of individuals looking to dethrone one of history's all-time fastest sprinters.
