Local Middle School Duo Earns National Recognition in STEM Competition
Two students from Canyon Vista Middle School have made headlines by earning top spots at the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge, a prestigious national STEM contest for middle schoolers.
Samvith Mahadevan and Arya Gowri Hirsave were among 30 finalists invited to Washington, D.C. after wowing judges with their projects at the Greater Austin Regional Science and Engineering Fair (GARSEF) and the Texas Science and Engineering Fair.
Canyon Vista Middle School Principal Laura Terry-Brown expressed pride over her students' accomplishments. "We, as their Mustang family, couldn’t be more proud of them," she said. "Arya and Samvith embody the qualities we need in tomorrow’s leaders—kids who navigate challenges with resilience, engage in thoughtful reflection, and turn their passions into meaningful contributions for the greater good."
Samvith took home first place at GARSEF with his project on novel olfactory sensor arrays in the detection of food and environmental allergens using artificial intelligence. He then claimed first place at the state contest, earning an honorable mention for the Best of Physical Science Award.
Arya won top honors in biochemistry at GARSEF with her project on the effect of various antibiotics on digestive enzyme activity. She aimed to help people better understand their bodies and potential side effects of taking different antibiotics.
Both students attribute their success to a desire to make a positive impact through science. "The way my project can help others brings a good feeling because I’m not only helping myself but others, and it could change their lives," Samvith said.
The Round Rock ISD community is celebrating the duo's achievements as shining examples of excellence in STEM education. Their hard work serves as inspiration to students across the nation, encouraging them to pursue a path in science and engineering.
