Local Houston Couple Turns Houseplants into Million-Dollar Business
A Houston-based couple, Leena Pettigrew and Marquise, have turned their passion for indoor gardening into a thriving business that earns them nearly Rs 1.25 crore (about $148,600) in just one year. What began as an effort to add greenery to their home has evolved into a lucrative side business that supports their family, allows Marquise to reduce his work hours, and even enabled the couple to take short weekend trips.
Leena's journey began five years ago when she tried indoor gardening for the first time with a gift succulent that didn't survive under her care. It wasn't until 2022 that she launched her side business through live-streamed auctions on an online marketplace. The business took off, and by July 2024, they were earning an average of $12,380 each month.
The couple operates out of their garage, which has been converted into a greenhouse, and manages up to 1,000 plants at any given time. Although Leena still works full-time in IT, earning around $90,000 annually, the plant business supports both of her incomes. Marquise, who co-owns an auto repair shop, also scales back his hours after the successful launch of their side business.
Leena credits her success to finding a balance between work and personal life. The couple's team of five part-time contractors relies on them for extra income, reducing some of the pressure. With a more relaxed customer base, they find the experience more rewarding.
Looking ahead, Leena dreams of surpassing her IT salary with the plant business. If successful, she plans to sell the auto shop, move to Florida, and open a large greenhouse, while also dedicating time to volunteering. The couple's story is an inspiration to anyone looking to turn their passion into a profitable venture.
This remarkable entrepreneurial journey highlights the importance of flexibility, hard work, and innovation in turning an everyday hobby into a successful business.
