Local Graphic Communications Student Brings Athletes of All Abilities Together in National-Like Campaign

A talented student of Pitt State University's Graphic Communications program has created a semester-long project that shines a spotlight on local athletes with diverse abilities and backgrounds, inspired by Nike's recent national campaign to showcase female athletes.

The project, titled "Sports Are For Every Body," was unveiled at Jock's Nitch in downtown Pittsburg this Saturday, featuring images of 10 remarkable athletes from the community. The display, which has drawn praise from local business owners and community members, aims to promote inclusivity and showcase the diversity of athletic talent.

The initiative originated from a course called Inclusive Design started by Professor Andrea Kent in 2020, where students learn user-centered design principles and strive to create more representative, user-friendly, and accessible creative works for various populations.

Senior Gracie Serrioz led the project, inspired by Nike's Super Bowl commercial "So Win," which showcased diverse athletes. She collaborated with Jock's Nitch, where she interns this fall, to bring her vision to life. Addie Hinteweger, a classmate and photography student, contributed her talent in capturing the moments.

The roster of featured athletes includes special Olympics competitors from Pittsburg, local sports stars from various fields, including basketball, wrestling, and more. Among them are:

  • Terri Kitch and Leanne Multhap
  • Kyler, Lily, Emmi Brown, Brodie Spencer
  • and Hannah Miller, a Pitt State Women's Basketball team member who made it to the Final Four

The project was meticulously executed by Serrioz, her colleagues, and Jock's Nitch staff, particularly design expert April Ahlders. This collaborative effort showcases the potential of community partnerships in promoting inclusivity.

"We have been fortunate to employ several Graphic Communications interns over the years," said Ahlders. "Gracie is among the top students I've worked with, with a very bright future ahead."

Business manager Tom Dunn commended Serrioz's innovative marketing vision and expressed appreciation for Pitt State's ongoing partnerships with local businesses like Jock's Nitch.

The event was marked by excitement as Gracie revealed her project to the public.
