LG Electronics Ranks as Global Leader in AI Robotics Patent Applications

Seoul, South Korea - A report from the Korean Intellectual Property Office revealed that LG Electronics has dominated the field of AI robotics patent applications over nearly a decade, emerging as the global leader with an impressive 1,038 patent filings between 2012 and 2021.

The number of AI robotics patent applications skyrocketed during this period, with an average annual growth rate of 58.5 percent, from just 20 in 2012 to a total of 1,260 by 2021. The Korean Electronics giant accounted for 18.8 percent of the world's total filings, leaving other major companies from China and the United States far behind.

Japan's FANUC followed closely with 97 patent applications, while South China Normal University from China took third place with 83 applications. Other notable Korean applicants, such as Samsung Electronics, trailed behind with 41 patent filings.

However, by country, AI robotics patent applications are dominated by China, which accounted for a staggering 60 percent of the total, totaling 3,313 patents. South Korea followed closely, accounting for 24.7 percent (1,367 applications), while the United States trailed at eighth place with 8.1 percent (446 applications).
