LEBANON RECOUNTED AS THE ANGRIEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD IN GALUP'S2024 GLOBAL EMOTIONS REPORT

A Gallup report has placed Lebanon at the top of a list of countries with high levels of anger, with 49% of its population expressing intense emotional turmoil. The country's ongoing socio-political crises, economic collapse, and social unrest have created an extremely negative emotional landscape for many of its citizens.

The report, which tracks emotions such as anger, stress, worry, and sadness across 142 countries, underscores the struggles faced by Lebanon's diverse population. The country's unique geography has made it a focal point for regional power struggles, with its location straddling Syria and Israel.

Hezbollah, a militant group backed by Iran, grew heavily reliant on Iranian funding in the 1980s, leaving Lebanon's other militias struggling to compete. Today, Hezbollah is seen as a powerful and well-equipped non-state military force, prompting tensions with neighboring countries such as Israel.

Recent escalations between Hamas and Israel led to significant violence, displacing over 150,000 civilians and intensifying tensions within the country. The situation remains volatile, with reports of civilian casualties and widespread devastation in Lebanon.

Lebanon's economic collapse has been severe, with infrastructure damage amounting to US$3.4 billion and an estimated US$8.5 billion in overall losses. The country is struggling to recover from years of war and political collapse, with many fearing a fragmented future as tensions escalate.

Analysts predict that the ongoing conflict may reshape Lebanon's future, with some suggesting the possibility of confederation-style governance as Israel continues to assert its influence over the country. While it remains uncertain whether Hezbollah will continue to play a dominant role in Lebanese society, one thing is clear – Lebanon is currently grappling with deep-seated frustrations and disillusionments.

Gallup's 2024 Global Emotions Report highlights the complex mental health landscape of a region already strained by conflict, poverty, and inequality.
