Ladakh to Host World's First High-Altitude Para Sports Centre Ahead of 2028 Paralympics
Leh, Ladakh - In a historic move, the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) and the Aditya Mehta Foundation (AMF) have signed a Memorandum and Understanding (MoU) to establish the world's first high-altitude para sports centre in Leh, Ladakh. The Centre aims to develop the skills and confidence of athletes ahead of the 2028 Paralympics.
The LAHDC was visibly proud to announce that Leh will host this unique facility, which marks a significant milestone for the region and India's para sports ecosystem. "It is a very proud feeling for us that Leh will be establishing the world's first-ever high-altitude centre for para sports," said Advocate Tashi Gyalson, Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) of LAHDC.
Meanwhile, 15 Children with Special Needs (CwSN) from the Leh-Ladakh UT region have been shortlisted to undergo a selection process in Hyderabad. These young contestants will receive training and counselling at the AMF's Infinity Parasports Academy and Rehabilitation Centre as part of the endeavour.
"This opening marks a new era not just for the region, but for India's future in international competitions," expressed Aditya Mehta, Founder, AMF. The centre is expected to offer a range of 27 different para sports disciplines for athletes, including Winter Games like Para Alpine Skiing and Para Biathlon.
The Centre aims to cultivate talented young athletes from Ladakh, who can compete on the global stage. With its unique elevation and pristine environment, Leh promises to be an exemplary location for developing para sports talent in India.
