Kolkata, Nov 23 (PTI) - The 5th edition of the prestigious Kolkata Jewellery & Gem Fair (KJGF) has kicked off from Saturday, with an aim to propel East India's rich jewellery heritage into a global market, despite growing competition.
Running until November 25, this three-day event, unveiled by West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant and West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC) Managing Director Vandana Yadav, brought together over 60 exhibitors, 200 top brands, and showcased an array of innovative jewellery designs.
Yadav outlined her vision for modernising Bengal's traditional strengths in jewellery craftsmanship, saying "jewellery has been a cornerstone of Bengal's cultural and economic identity, but we must bridge tradition with innovation." The management of key industry player WBIDC echoed this sentiment.
During the fair, guests witnessed success stories of renowned projects like Gems & Jewellery Park at Ankurhati near Kolkata, showcasing revamped artisan workspaces, enhanced efficiency and improved conditions. Moreover, hallmarking, standardisation, and training for artisans are being encouraged, with several government initiatives now in place.
Keynote events also touched upon platforms such as KJGF in driving collaboration between the state's industry leaders and policymakers.
"In addition to boosting business, these gatherings have proven valuable for securing investment and expanding fresh opportunities. Therefore, our focus remains on strengthening the presence of events like this at the venue," Yadav urged local event planners.
A 7-year period analysis projected India’s gem and jewellery market, with valued USD 43.71 billion in 2023, could expand to approximately USD 133.96 billion by 2030 at a yearly CAGR of 17.35 percent.
Furthermore, regional contributions stand at 15% of overall national productiveness, focusing predominantly as critical craftsmanship and export centers, primarily thanks to their pivotal presence in Kolkata.
