Kohli vs Sharma: Experts Weigh In On India's Test Batters' Future As World Championship Hangs in Balance

Mumbai, December 28 - The Boxing Day Test defeat to Australia has reignited the debate on the future of two Indian cricket legends, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar weighed in on the discussion, stating that Kohli deserves more leeway than his teammate due to his stature as a modern-day Test great.

Manjrekar made it clear that there is no comparison between the two batsmen's skills - Virat Kohli is considered one of the greatest Test batters of their generation, while Rohit Sharma's white-ball prowess can't be matched by many. Manjrekar believes that Kohli deserves more patience and understanding from fans and coaches alike as he navigates a challenging phase.

The legendary cricketer pointed out that Kohli has 30 centuries in Test cricket, having played an impressive 122 matches, whereas Rohit Sharma, in contrast, has played just 67 Tests. Manjrekar noted that their batting careers have been contrasting - Rohit's struggles in Test cricket are overshadowed by his incredible success in One-Day Internationals (ODIs).

Manjrekar did not shy away from criticizing Rohit Sharma's recent performance with a dismal return of 31 runs in five matches at an average of 6.20, sparking calls for the team management to re-evaluate his captaincy and batting position.

On the other hand, Manjrekar stressed that Kohli's situation requires more compassion due to his reputation as a modern-day Test great. He stressed that it is crucial not on Kohli but rather where the batting coach of India stands in addressing the core issues with Team India's performance.

This ongoing saga brings back concerns about the future of India's captaincy selection for both formats and questions whether an older team needs someone like Rohit Sharma to drive their cricket towards a better World Test Championship finish.

The series against Australia has taken many twists, as it is heading into its final leg. Will this change something in the decision-making process at Team India?
