King Charles's Godson Embroiled in Tax Evasion Scandal Linked to American Financier
A godson of King Charles has been linked to an American financier accused by the U.S. government of evading taxes on over $350 million in military contract profits.
Lord Charles Tryon, a 48-year-old financier and CEO of Maris Limited, a Mauritius-based venture capital fund, holds positions at several companies tied to Douglas Edelman, a former defense contractor charged with tax evasion, conspiracy, and providing false information to U.S. authorities.
Edelman made over $7 billion from military contracts in Afghanistan and the Middle East before his arrest in July 2022. Prosecutors claim he used offshore companies to evade tens of millions in taxes by placing assets in his French wife's name.
Tryon denies any involvement in Edelman's alleged tax evasion scheme, despite holding power of attorney in connection with one of Edelman's entities from 2009 to 2011 and being a director of another company until 2011. Tryon has pleaded ignorance over these connections, stating he worked in Edelman-linked businesses until mid-2008.
The links between Tryon's companies and those allegedly used by Edelman were revealed through leaked records from the Pandora Papers and International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).
Documents also show that Maris Limited, owned by Tryon, holds over $125 million worth of assets with investments including a machinery dealership in Angola, mining businesses in Zimbabwe, and a forestry business in South Sudan.
The Edelman case is part of Operation Jetsetter, an international collaboration between the British tax authority and the IRS's Joint Chiefs of Global Tax Enforcement (J5). The London property purchased by Edelman has previously been owned by prominent figures such as Lord Conrad Black and Alan Bond.
As the scandal unfolds, questions have raised about King Charles's personal connection to Tryon. Their relationship remains unclear, but it is revealed that Tryon is a godson of the British monarch.
The investigation continues into alleged tax evasion and related financial crimes linked to Edelman and his associates.
