Khelo India Winter Games 2025 Inaugurated in Leh, Ladakh with Fervent Enthusiasm

LEH, LADAKH - The fifth edition of the Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG) 2025 commenced on January 23 with a thrilling grand opening ceremony at the NDS Stadium in Leh, Ladakh. Dignitaries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, congratulated the Union Territory of Ladakh for hosting one of India's major winter sports events.

Despite inclement weather preventing physical attendance, Mandaviya led the inauguration via a heartfelt virtual message. In his address, he emphasized the vision behind KIWG - promoting youth development through winter sports, creating talent platforms and nurturing national pride.

The opening ceremony was marked with performances showcasing Ladakh's art, culture, and heritage on display during an ice hockey exhibition match and cultural routines performed by teams participating in the Games.

19 teams from various States, Union Territories, and institutional outfits attended to compete. A total of 594 participants, including athletes, took part at this stage in the Games. Winter sports disciplines under KIWG highlight India's growing commitment to winter events.

Kiwg, which was launched by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) as a competitive endeavor for national glory includes competitions like Khelo india Youth Games, University Games, Para Olympics & Winter games – initiatives fostering talent across youth groups, sports institutions & clubs. It will soon be on schedule to take part from Jammu & Kashmir from February 22-25.

The event not only presents athletes with opportunities of achieving National honor but also showcases Ladakh and J&K - destinations for winter adventure - rich art, culture heritage and tourism potential.

Minister Dr Mandaviya stated his dream is to have India claim the top podium spot at any international Winter Sports events.
