Keel Laid for Future Research Vessel as Part of Bilateral Cooperation

VILNIUS, LITHUANIA - The Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute, a renowned research institute based in Germany, has successfully laid the keel of a future research vessel set to join its fleet at a shipyard in Klaipeda, Lithuania. This significant milestone marks an important step towards the vessel's completion and underscores the strong partnership between German and Lithuanian industries.

The research vessel, named Walther Herwig in honor of a distinguished German lawyer and fisheries research pioneer, is part of a strategic initiative aimed at promoting marine research and technology development. The name pays tribute to the contributions made by Herwig, who played a pivotal role in shaping Germany's fishery research and management policies.

Upon completion of the hull at the Klaipeda shipyard, the vessel will be transported to Fassmer, one of Germany's premier shipyards, for further completion. This bi-lateral cooperation between German and Lithuanian industries not only strengthens ties between the two nations but also highlights the growing importance of the Baltic Sea region in marine research and development.

The Walther Herwig is expected to make a significant impact in advancing our understanding of the world's oceans and its ecosystems, while contributing to Germany's efforts in promoting sustainable fishing practices and marine conservation. As the research vessel nears completion, the von Thünen Institute is set to embark on an exciting new chapter in maritime research and discovery.
