Kashmiri Students' Beard Controversy at Karnataka College Resolved Peacefully

Hassan, Karnataka, November 11, 2024 - A dispute regarding Kashmiri students maintaining long beards at a government nursing college in Karnataka has been resolved amicably, according to Dr. Rajanna, Director of Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences.

The issue emerged when the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association penned a letter to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, highlighting "significant challenges" faced by students at the college in Holenarasipura, Hassan district. The students alleged that they were being pressured to either trim their beards to a specific length or shave completely to participate in college activities, including clinical duties.

The association emphasized that the right to personal appearance, including the choice to grow a beard, is a fundamental aspect of individual freedom and identity. They argued that such policies were discriminatory and created an environment of exclusion, potentially violating the students' rights and affecting their academic performance due to attendance issues.

However, Dr. Rajanna clarified that the college's instructions were not meant to discriminate but to maintain a standard of hygiene and tidiness during clinical processes. "These students misunderstood the instructions about maintaining a neat appearance and keeping beards trimmed," Dr. Rajanna explained. After discussions with the students, they agreed to adhere to the college's dress code and grooming standards.

"The issue has now been resolved. Currently, there are 40 students, and they are content in their hostels. Faculty and the principal have visited their rooms to provide counseling," Dr. Rajanna added, ensuring that the matter was handled with sensitivity to both the students' cultural practices and the institution's professional requirements.

This resolution marks a positive step towards addressing cultural sensitivities while maintaining institutional standards, fostering an inclusive educational environment at the college.
