Kankaria Carnival Cancellation: India Mourns Loss of Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh
The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has announced that the Kankaria Carnival in Gandhinagar will be canceled until December 31st, marking a period of national mourning for the death of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, national mourning has been declared across India for seven days, starting from Thursday night when former Prime Minister Singh passed away at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. He was 92 years old and had suffered age-related issues leading to his demise.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, who had inaugurated the carnival just a day ago, expressed condolences over the incident and asked people to suspend all events and ceremonies for as long as the national mourning lasts. The central government urged citizens of the country to participate in the mourning period with dignity and restraint.
The cancellation of the carnival has been welcomed by locals, who have called it an example of coming together with respect for the nation's leader. "His contributions to our nation cannot be measured just by his deeds but how people from all walks of life have taken time off his demise," said local resident Jayant Joshi.
Additionally, CM Patel will visit various parts of the city, including Kankaria where the carnival was set up in honor of Manmohan Singh's legacy. He has also offered exgratiation to Dr Manmohan Singh’s mortal remains at AICC and held his last rites on Rajghat.
The nation will come together one more time during the seven days national mourning when India pays tribute to former prime minister who played pivotal role in the country's development, particularly concerning the green revolution.
