Kailash Gahlot Quits AAP Amid Fissures Over Leadership and Promotions

New Delhi, Nov 17 (ANI): Delhi's former home minister Kailash Gahlot on Sunday quit the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) amidst reports of internal squabbles and party brass snubbing him over his promotions.

Gahlot's departure comes amid a power struggle in the AAP with sources close to the party saying he was not given sufficient power and position despite being considered senior-most leader after top three cabinet ministers were arrested.

Sources said Gahlot, 50, had expected better opportunities after Kejriwal took over as Delhi chief minister. However, his ambitions were dashed when Kejriwal appointed 'newcomer' Atishi as the chief minister ahead of him for flag-hoisting on August 15 this year.

Gahlot's quiet and behind-the-scenes approach to leadership also clashed with AAP brass who are more vocal in their protests against the Delhi Lieutenant Governor (L-G) and Centre.

The AAP had earlier nominated Gahlot for hoisting the national flag at Independence Day event, bypassing Kejriwal, but later accepted his resignation amid controversy.

Gahlot was allocated significant portfolios, including law, justice and legislative affairs and revenue, under Sisodia who quit in February this year. However, sources said Gahlot's importance dwindled further when Atishi joined the cabinet.

This move may be seen as an attempt by Kejriwal to placate senior AAP leaders for their opposition over him.
