Kailash Gahlot Leaves Aam Aadmi Party After Feeling Underappreciated

NEW DELHI, NOVEMBER 18, 2024: Former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA and cabinet minister Kailash Gahlot has quit the party amid reports of pressure from central agencies and a bitter power struggle with AAP leadership.

Gahlot, a 50-year-old veteran politician, was reportedly disappointed with his fate after top leadership went to jail and a reshuffle took place in the party. He had expected better positions and powers, considering he was one of the senior-most leaders in terms of age after three cabinet ministers were arrested and resigned.

The AAP chief, Arvind Kejriwal, appointed Atishi, a newcomer MLA, as the new Chief Minister in February 2023, which allegedly hurt Gahlot's feelings. Atishi was given several portfolios including education, PWD, power and tourism, which many in the party felt was an error.

Despite his relatively calm demeanor, Gahlot clashed with AAP leadership over decision-making on major issues like transport. Although, he made it a point to attend events where Kejriwal was present to show strength.

But he was also snubbed at several key events, including those where Atishi and other senior leaders were part of the celebrations. For instance, when L-G VK Saxena was instrumental in resolving a contentious issue with Delhi administration, Gahlot's absence became conspicuous.

Moreover, AAP's decision to nominate Atishi for flag-hoisting on Independence Day last year instead of Gahlot enraged many party members who had expected him to be chosen.

Gahlot's leadership style differed significantly from that of Kejriwal. While AAP leaders were vocal against the Centre and L-G almost daily, Gahlot stayed relatively quiet and developed a good working relationship with government officials.

Sources close to his inner circle revealed that there was immense discontent within certain AAP circles and a sense of injustice, as many felt he had more deserving qualifications than a newcomer like Atishi for top posts.
