IOA Looks To Streamline Medal Sports And Demonstrations At National Games

MUMBAI, INDIA - 16 JANUARY 2025: The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has announced its intention to revamp the medal events and demonstrations at the upcoming National Games in order to align with international standards.

"In an effort to ensure our premier status for preparing athletes who can excel on the global stage while also being able to hold on to the rich cultural and historical significance of the competition, we need to streamline the medal events," said a statement from IOA officials.

The association highlighted the National Games as a platform that has fostered national talent since its inception in the 1920s. The event was first initiated by Dr A. G. Noehren and Harry Crowe Buck, who aimed to channel India's youth energy through a nationwide sporting tournament.

Over recent editions, regional sports have been included as demonstration events to engage local audiences and promote regional sports culture. However, some regional sports were recently elevated to medal events, which has led the IOA to re-examine its approach to ensure clarity between demonstration and medal events.

Given the significant benefits for medal winners, including job reservations, pay increments, and prize money, the IOA believes it is crucial to maintain competitive standards at global levels. As a result, the association plans to redefine the scope of medal sports.

According to officials, only sports disciplines recognized by international games such as the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, and Asian Games will be considered for inclusion in the National Games. This would ensure that the event upholds its integrity and competitive standards while respecting the cultural significance and local flavors of India's regional sports.

"We aim to create a balance between excellence in medal events and inclusivity of regional sports culture," said the IOA officials, adding that they will present a proposal outlining this approach at the next General Assembly meeting.
