International Student Flips Language Barrier into Benefit, Finds Voice at Montclair State University

Albany, NY - Ecuadoran international student Andrea Uguna's story is a testament to the power of perseverance and transforming struggles into success.

Graduating with a Master of Science in Nutrition and Food Science from Montclair State University's College of Community Health, Uguna credits her determination and support system for overcoming language barriers, homesickness, and seasonal depression in her first semester.

Uguna moved to the United States two years ago to join her husband, who was pursuing a master's degree in structural engineering. She volunteered to translate for Spanish-speaking patients at a hospital to improve her English, and later applied to graduate school in the U.S., feeling welcomed as an international student by Montclair University.

Despite her academic background, Uguna soon discovered that "speaking English is not the same as taking a class in English," and she encountered difficulties with transferring credits and navigating research classes. However, her willingness to volunteer with professors revealed the importance of those classes and her own potential, leading her to contribute to projects on supplemental nutrition programs for women, infants, and children (WIC) and lactation programs in New Jersey.

Today, Uguna's perseverance has paid off. She is a member of Alpha Epsilon Lambda Honor Society, co-authored research papers with Montclair Nutrition and Food Studies professors, presented findings at conferences internationally, and collaborated on a food insecurity report focused on Montclair students.

The University's supportive environment played a significant role in her success. Faculty and staff, student organizations, and the Office of Global Engagement provided Uguna with the resources she needed to overcome her initial struggles and find her voice.

As she embarks on the next chapter of her career, completing a dietetic internship to become a registered dietitian and pursuing certification as an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant, Uguna credits Montclair University for changing her life. Her ultimate goal is to open her own lactation practice, "Montclair has given me the final puzzle piece," she says.

Uguna's inspiring story serves as a testament to the transformative power of education and community support, reminding students, prospective students, and parents that with perseverance and determination, anyone can overcome challenges and achieve success.
