India's Urbanisation Challenges: Can Technology Deliver?

New Delhi, December 10, 2023 - As India pushes to become a major player in the global technology landscape, its urban cities are grappling with mounting challenges that threaten to undermine their ability to provide for the growing demands of citizens. From fundamental necessities like clean water and electricity, to housing, transportation, and tackling pollution, Indian cities face an increasingly complex set of problems.

Government sources admit that traditional measures to address these challenges have shown limited success. "The scale of our urbanisation challenges is simply too big for outdated solutions," said a government official on condition of anonymity. "We need innovative technologies to help us manage resources more efficiently and sustainably."

One area that holds promise lies in the realm of data analytics, IoT-enabled sensing systems, and smart grids. By harnessing the power of technology, Indian cities can develop better waste management systems, improve traffic flow, and create more efficient transportation networks.

Moreover, green technologies such as solar energy, renewable water management systems, and urban farming are being touted as key solutions to addressing India's perennial problems with pollution and climate change.

Urban planners now see technology as the game-changer in addressing some of the most pressing issues facing India's cities. "Technology can play a significant role in improving our residents' lives by making cities more livable, sustainable, and efficient," said Dr. Rohini Pande, Director-General of Public Works Department in Mumbai.
