India's Rising Global Influence Highlighted by Aditya Birla Group Chairman

Mumbai, May 28, 2024 - Kumar Mangalam Birla, the Chairperson of the Aditya Birla Group, underscored India's pivotal role in the global market during his address at the silver jubilee celebration of the Aditya Birla Scholarships programme on Sunday. Birla emphasized that India is not merely another consumer market but a critical growth engine for global corporations aiming to enhance their fortunes worldwide.

Speaking at the event, Birla noted, "Indian businesses are making bold global investments despite the uncertain global environment." He highlighted the Aditya Birla Group's significant investments in the United States, totaling over $15 billion, with manufacturing operations spread across 20 locations in 15 states, making it India's largest investor in the US across various sectors.

Birla also pointed out the transformative growth of companies like Suzuki in India, where the market capitalization of its Indian business now surpasses that of its global parent, a stark contrast to a decade ago. "Today’s India dares to dream, leads with confidence, and is a significant part of the global narrative. In many ways, India is a pioneer," Birla stated.

The occasion also celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Aditya Birla Scholarships, established in 1999 to honor the legacy of the late industrialist Aditya Vikram Birla. Over the years, the scholarship has become one of India's most prestigious merit-based programs, with over 10,000 applications reviewed by experts committed to excellence and diversity. Currently, there are 781 Aditya Birla Scholars across engineering, management, and law disciplines.

The scholarship program has achieved gender parity, with nearly 30% of its scholars being women. It partners with 22 premier educational institutions, including IITs, BITS Pilani, IIMs, XLRI, and National Law Schools, providing substantial financial support to students. Birla stressed the importance of investing in talent, stating, "Ultimately, investment in talent shapes the future."

The programme not only supports academic excellence but also encourages active participation in co-curricular activities, ensuring a holistic development of scholars who are prepared to excel both in India and represent the country abroad. The event in Mumbai was a testament to the programme’s impact, resonating through its alumni who are making significant contributions to the global business landscape.
