India's Electronics Industry Needs Radical Growth to Become Competitive Global Player

Kolkata, 22 May (Alayaran.com): The Indian electronics sector has been steadily growing over the years, despite facing stiff competition from countries like China and Taiwan. Ajai Chowdhry, co-founder of HCL and Chairman of the National Quantum Mission of India's Mission Governing Board, believes that the country has a significant strength in design capabilities. However, it lacks a critical step - manufacturing.
"The problem is not just about designing products, but also about manufacturing them," Mr. Chowdhry stated during an interview with Alarian.com. "We need to transform our industry into a 'product nation' where we have the capability to manufacture these products and make India self-sufficient in the electronics sector."
To achieve this goal, the government has announced several initiatives under the India Semiconductor Mission. According to sources, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is set to launch new semiconductor package, expected to have an outlay of around ₹8,000 crore.
However, the plan for this major investment is yet unclear. Industry experts are holding their breaths, awaiting a clear roadmap on how this fund will be utilized over the next two years.
"Government support and private sector collaboration are needed to drive growth in this industry," said Mr Chowdhry. "We need radical reforms to bring down costs, increase domestic production, and make India an electronics manufacturing hub."
Mr Chowdhury believes that to achieve its goal of becoming a competitive global player in the electronic industry, India needs to transform its industrial policies and create more favorable environments for businesses.
To boost India's standing as an electronics manufacturer, the National Quantum Mission of India was set up by Mr Chowdhry in 2021 under his chairmanship. The initiative aims at encouraging innovation in Indian manufacturing.
"We have a great talent pool in this country," said Ajai Chowdhury adding, "But, to take our electronic industry to the next level it needs changes. More investment is required and government support can encourage more businesses to invest here."
