Indian Institutions in Global Higher EducationRankings: Rise of IITs
MUMBAI, NOVEMBER 15 - The latest edition of the Global Employability University Ranking and Survey (GEURS) 2025 has ranked ten Indian educational institutions, led by the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, among the world's best 250 universities for graduate employability.
The top-ranked IIT Delhi, at a humble 28th position, is followed closely by the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, which has improved its ranking to 47th spot. This marks an increase of eight places from last year and solidifies India's position in global higher education.
IIT Bombay follows at 60th position (previously ranked 62nd), while IIT Kharagpur and IIM Ahmedabad occupy spots at 141 and 160 respectively. Other institutions like the University of Delhi (219) and Amity University (225) also make it to the top 250, with notable performances from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (214) and Anna University.
According to Sandrine Belloc, Managing Director and co-founder of Emerging, producer of GEURS, India's higher education system is evolving rapidly in response to student aspirations and an ever-changing job market. Many institutions featured in the rankings have demonstrated innovative responses to these demands, leading to the development of programmes aligned with emerging industries.
However, the system remains concentrated among a small group of prestigious institutions, with consistent quality and limited employability outcomes plaguing many other institutions. The GEURS highlights the importance of adaptability and work experience or internships in employer assessments for graduate candidates.
As the ranking continues to reflect India's growing presence in global higher education, experts see an increase in collaborations between academia and industry as key to bridging this gap.
