Indian Govt Raises Major Security Warning For Chrome Users On Windows And Mac

An urgent security warning has been issued by the Indian government for millions of Chrome users on Windows and Mac devices. The latest threat alert from the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) highlights multiple security issues in Google Chrome browser that can be exploited to gain unauthorized access to sensitive information or crash systems.

According to the CERT-In advisory, two use-after-free vulnerabilities in the "Serial" and "Family Experiences" components of Google Chrome can be taken advantage of by persuading a user to visit a specially crafted webpage. If successfully exploited, these vulnerabilities could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code, obtain unauthorized access to sensitive data, or cause a Denial of Service (DoS) condition.

The security risk affects users running earlier versions of Chrome browser on Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms. Specifically:

  • Google Chrome versions prior to 130.0.6723.116 for Linux are affected
  • Google Chrome versions prior to 130.0.6723.116/.117 for Windows and Mac are also at risk

The Indian government is urging users to download the latest available software update for Google Chrome on their systems, which includes security patches for these identified vulnerabilities.

To verify your browser version and ensure you have the latest security patch:

  • Open Chrome on your desktop
  • Click on the three-dot menu on the top-right corner
  • Hover down to Help and click on About Google Chrome
  • The browser will check for the latest version and install it

Users are recommended to update their Chrome browsers immediately to mitigate the risks posed by these vulnerabilities.
