India Welcomes Largest-Ever Israeli Business Delegation, Highlights Growing Economic Ties

New Delhi: In a significant move to bolster India-Israel economic partnership, the country welcomed its largest-ever business delegation from Israel, led by key dignitaries including Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, Israeli Minister of Economy and Industry Nir Barkat, and Israeli Ambassador to India Reuven Azar.

The delegation, comprising top Israeli CEOs and industry leaders from various sectors, has been engaging in high-level discussions with Indian officials. The topics discussed include technology, manufacturing, healthcare, agri-tech, food processing, defense, homeland security, water management, logistics, and retail.

Addressing the event, Nir Barkat expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his support following the October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel, which killed hundreds of people and destroyed infrastructure in the region. The Israeli economy minister likened the attack to atrocities committed by the Nazis during World War II, decrying Hamas as a terrorist organisation.

Barkat shared a personal connection with India, revealing that his daughter is married to an Indian, making him a proud grandfather. He praised Indians, saying, "We trust Indians. We feel comfortable with Indians," highlighting the strong people-to-people ties between the two nations.

The visit coincides with India and Israel's efforts to expand their business cooperation. Barkat stressed that India boasts young minds and global stature, making it an attractive hub for investment opportunities. He highlighted major investments such as Adani Group's acquisition of Haifa Port and the potential of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).

The Israeli minister expressed optimism about forging solutions to boost economies and improve the lives of Indians and Israelis alike. When asked about the status of the India-Israel Free Trade Agreement, Barkat disclosed that discussions were underway but refused to specify a timeline.

The partnership for the business forum was formed by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, with the Embassy of Israel and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) playing key roles in facilitating the interactions.
