India Unveils Project Akashteer, Revolutionary Air Defense System

New Delhi: In a significant move to bolster its air defense capabilities, the Indian Army has successfully launched Project Akashteer, a cutting-edge technology initiative aimed at enhancing the nation's response to aerial threats. The project, part of the "Decade of Transformation" and "Year of Tech Absorption," promises to revolutionize India's defense landscape with an advanced, automated air defense system.

A recent live demo of the project showcased its capabilities in addressing potential future conflict scenes, with a top military officer praising the team behind the creation. The demonstration highlighted Akashteer's transformative impact on the Army's air defense network, boasting unparalleled responsiveness and reliability.

Key features of Project Akashteer include:

  • Comprehensive Sensor Fusion: Integrating land-based sensors from both the Army Air Defence (AAD) and Indian Air Force (IAF), ensuring a unified air picture.
  • Automated Operations for Faster Response: Eliminating manual data entry time, allowing timely responses to aerial threats at supersonic speeds.
  • Decentralised Engagement Authority: Empowering units on the front lines with rapid engagement decisions while maintaining controlled freedom.

The system provides an advanced real-time air picture through integration of live data from various sources. Built-in redundancy and scalability make it a future-proof platform adaptable to evolving technological needs. The project's flexibility enables mobile, adaptable platforms for strike formations and hardened land-based systems for pivot formations.

The Indian Army has received 107 systems so far out of the required 455. Another 105 are expected to arrive by March 2025, with the remaining units targeted for delivery by March 2027.

This groundbreaking initiative aims to position India at the forefront of air defense technology. With Project Akashteer, the Indian Army is poised to enhance its potency and monitor the nation's skies closely, securing a robust defense system that addresses contemporary aerial threats with agility and precision.
