India to Set Up New Semiconductor Package Worth Billions

Kolkata: Ajai Chowdhry, co-founder of HCL and chairman of the Mission Governing Board of India's National Quantum Mission, has outlined a vision for India's semiconductors sector. The foundation, EPIC Foundation, set up by Chowdhry in 2021, aims to make India a "product nation" in electronics.

In an exclusive conversation with Daily Alayaran.com, Chowdhry called upon the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to invest heavily in setting up a new semiconductor package. Although no specific outlay has been announced yet, industry experts estimate that it could be worth billions of dollars. The proposed package is expected to boost India's electronics manufacturing capabilities and enable the country to design, develop, and manufacture its own semiconductors.

Chowdhry emphasized that India's strength lies in its design capabilities, but noted that the sector still relies heavily on global companies using Indian talent and resources to create products. To bridge this gap, he advocated for increased investment in semiconductor and electronics manufacturing facilities within the country. This would not only help India become a product nation but also enable it to export high-quality electronic products globally.

The initiative complements the government's existing efforts to boost the sector through initiatives like the National Quantum Mission and the India Semiconductor Mission. As India strives to emerge as a major player in the global electronics industry, implementing such ambitious projects will be crucial for its success.
