India to Add 33.89 Million New Jobs by 2028, Driven by AI Transformation

New Delhi: India is poised to see a significant surge in its workforce, thanks to the country's adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven transformation, according to a recent report. The report predicts that the Indian economy will add 33.89 million new jobs between 2023 and 2028, taking the total workforce to 457.62 million by 2028.

The retail sector is expected to lead employment growth, requiring an additional 6.96 million workers to fuel its expansion, followed by manufacturing (1.50 million jobs), education (0.84 million jobs), and healthcare (0.80 million jobs) sectors.

AI is also set to create new opportunities in the tech industry, with emerging technologies generating 2.73 million new tech jobs by 2028. The research by AI platform ServiceNow mentioned that tech-related jobs are growing across industries, with software application developers, systems software developers, data engineers, and web developers being some of the roles expected to see significant growth.

Software application developers will add 109,700 positions, while systems software developers are expected to gain an additional 48,800 new jobs. Data engineers will also benefit from AI transformation, with a projected increase of 48,500 new roles.

However, not all tech professionals will benefit equally. The report noted that System Administrators will experience the largest shift, with 6.9 hours of their weekly tasks automated or augmented by emerging technologies.

The growth in tech jobs is expected to be driven by AI and gen AI, which will significantly impact various roles such as Data Integration Specialists, Database Architects, Data Scientists, Computer and Information Systems Managers, among others.

"It's a strategic emphasis for professionals to build enduring digital careers through the adoption of emerging technologies," said Sumeet Mathur, SVP and Managing Director, ServiceNow India Technology and Business Center. "AI will empower them to take on high-value roles and create sustainable jobs in the future."
