India Offers Military Support to Maldives as Defences ministers Meet

In a surprise move, months after strained relations between India and the Maldives were at their lowest ebb, New Delhi has conveyed its readiness to support the island nation in boosting its defence preparedness. During a meeting with its counterpart Mohammed Ghassan Maumoon, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh assured cooperation in maritime security, as they discussed ways to strengthen bilateral ties.

Maumoon's three-day visit to India came nearly eight months after the country pulled out its military personnel from the Maldives due to demands by pro-China President Mohamed Muizzu. This move had significantly strained relations between the two nations, however, a recent state visit by Muizzu and the release of a joint vision document during the visit has provided new momentum for bilateral ties.

Speaking at the meeting with Maumoon, Rajnath Singh stressed his country's commitment to support the Maldives as part of its "Neighbourhood First Policy." The policy aims to bring stability and prosperity to the Indian Ocean region.

The defense ministry announced that both countries reaffirmed their shared vision for a comprehensive economic and maritime security partnership. Defence officials stated that they reasserted their firm agreement to work together in realising this joint vision during their discussion.

In relation, it needs to be mentioned that India recently provided $50 million crucial support to the Maldives budget due to enhanced diplomatic relations on November 19. The aid was seen as part of efforts by New Delhi to strengthen ties with its smaller South Asian neighbour, which has faced pressure from rising China in the region.
