India Expresses Concerns Over China's Massive Dam on Brahmaputra River

New Delhi, January 03, 2025: In a response to growing concerns over a massive dam being constructed by China on the Brahmaputra River,MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal has addressed India's stance on the issue.

"We have seen the recent information released by Xinhua regarding a hydropower project on the Yarlung Tsangpo River in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China," said Randhir Jaiswal. "As a lower riparian state with established user rights to the waters of the river, we have consistently expressed our views and concerns to the Chinese side over mega projects on rivers in their territory."

India has been voicing its concerns over the project following the latest report, urging the Chinese government to ensure that the interests of downstream states like India are not harmed by activities in upstream areas.MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal has reiterated these demands to the Chinese side.

"We will continue to monitor this situation and take necessary measures to protect our interests," he said.

The construction of a massive dam on the Brahmaputra River has raised concerns among India and downstream nations, as it could impact the river's water flow and affect agriculture, industry, and other sectors in the region. With India seeking transparency and consultation with downstream countries, the international community remains vigilant to ensure that this issue does not escalate into a major conflict.
