India and US Collaborate on Next-Generation Wireless Broadcast Services

New Delhi, November 11, 2024 - The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sinclair, Inc., a leading technology company in the United States, to collaborate on next-generation wireless broadcast services over the next few years.

The partnership aims to enhance the international ATSC 3.0 wireless broadcast standard, which is set to benefit India and the world with advanced technologies such as Broadcast-to-Everything (B2X). This innovation is expected to improve broadcasting standards by offering dynamic traffic management, fast interworking with 5G networks, efficient spectrum utilization, and more.

"B2X will revolutionize data distribution efficiency across multiple networks," said Madeleine Noland, President of the Advanced Television Standards Committee (ATSC). "We applaud Sinclair's and IIT Bombay's participation in B2X standards and technology development."

IIT Bombay will also contribute directly to the standardization work underway as a member of ATSC. The Indian Institute of Technology is expected to drive this partnership by addressing India's growing mobile data consumption, population expansion of live news, sports, and linear TV, as well as improving network resilience.

Professor Shireesh Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay, expressed the institution's excitement to partner with Sinclair, stating that "this collaboration touch[es] our mission to address the needs of society and country at large and develop technologies and products that improve the quality of life for both urban and rural populations."

Sinclair, Inc.'s President and CEO, Chris Ripley, said that "collaboration work" with IIT Bombay is a priority in establishing ATSC 3.0-based B2X as one of the preferred technologies for broadcasting and multicasting across diverse applications worldwide.

The potential benefits of this partnership include improved disaster management, remote education, agricultural techniques, and open AI-based applications for broadcasting and datacasting. The decision to collaborate furthers India's "Viksit Bharat" vision (Developed India), envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi."
