India and Singapore Eye Establishment of 'Corridor for Renewable Energy'

In a significant move to boost bilateral ties between India and Singapore, President Tharman Shanmugaratnam announced plans to establish a "corridor for renewable energy" besides advancing cooperation in advanced manufacturing and semiconductors during his maiden visit to India.

Addressing reporters on Thursday, the Singaporean President stated that discussions are underway to explore developing a "data corridor" between the GIFT City in Gujarat and Singapore. This would enable financial institutions of both countries to exchange data securely and trustworthily.

Shanmugaratnam's five-day visit to India coincided with upgraded relations being upgraded to a comprehensive strategic partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Singapore last September. The Indian government sees this initiative as part of a "new trajectory" in cooperation between the two nations, which is expected to bear significant fruits.

During separate talks with President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shanmugaratnam extensively reviewed bilateral relations and explored ways to strengthen the strategic partnership. They also engaged on discussions regarding regional and global issues of mutual concern.

The two leaders exchanged views during their meeting, which is expected to pave the way for a closer working relationship between India and Singapore in areas such as sustainable development and cutting-edge technology.
